For the NBA Abu Dhabi Games 2025, the Hybrid Xperience team transformed a single-player basketball court into a fully interactive environment. Featuring projection mapping on both the floor and walls, the installation turned physical gameplay into a responsive immersive experience.

Gameplay Mechanics

Players registered via a touchscreen interface before stepping onto the court. The game consisted of five difficulty levels. To start a level, the player had to stand on a specific projected activation zone. With each new level, this shooting zone moved progressively further from the hoop. Successful shots triggered real-time interactive VFX and SFX, awarding points that were logged into a dynamic Top-10 leaderboard projected on the court between game states.

Technical Implementation

I was responsible for developing the core game logic and interactive pipeline in TouchDesigner. To track the player’s position on the court, I implemented and calibrated a LiDAR sensor. For the hoop, I used a Kinect sensor, utilizing 3D spatial analysis to accurately detect when the ball passed through the net. My TouchDesigner setup handled the entire backend of the game: sensor data acquisition, score calculation, leaderboard data management, and syncing the interactive triggers with the visual and audio assets created by our content team.
